Do solar security cameras work in winter?

Yes, but with less margin. Short days and a low sun mean less charge, snow can cover the panel, and Reolink says its panels will not charge the camera's battery below 32°F. The camera runs from its battery through a cold spell and catches up when it warms.

Ring's battery page adds a general point: rechargeable batteries drain faster in the cold. So in winter you get less charge in and more drain out at the same time.
Set the panel up for winter sun
- Face it south if you are in the Northern Hemisphere, per Reolink.
- Tilt it. Reolink says 40 to 45 degrees works well year round, and your latitude plus 5 degrees is ideal. A flat panel collects snow, leaves and dust.
- Keep it out of shade. Not under an eave, not behind a tree. The winter sun is lower, so shade that did not matter in June may cover the panel in December.
- Clear snow after storms if you can reach the panel safely.
- Cut wake-ups. Fewer motion events means less drain. Tighter motion zones help most. See the battery guide for the math.
Motion detection in the cold
eufy's support page says the heat sensor (PIR) in its battery SoloCam can be less sensitive in cold weather, and it suggests raising motion sensitivity in winter even if summer settings worked. That trades some battery for fewer missed events. Check a few clips after the first cold week.
