What works free and what needs a paid plan
Updated
A security camera with no saved video is a live feed you have to be watching at the right second. That is why the plan question matters more than resolution. Here is what the six listings we read say, in plain words.
What we saw on the listings
| Camera | With no plan | Needs a paid plan or extra gear |
|---|---|---|
| eufy SoloCam S220 | Saved clips on 8 GB built in, person detection | Listing says no monthly fee. Face recognition needs the maker's HomeBase 3 hub |
| REOLINK Argus PT | Motion clips to microSD, hub or FTP. Person and vehicle detection | Cloud storage is optional. The listing shows a 7 day cloud trial |
| WYZE Cam v4 | Nonstop recording to a microSD card you supply | Cloud backup and some smart features. Some owners say they hit plan limits on things they saw as basic |
| Tapo C500 | Recording to a microSD card you supply, person detection, motion tracking | Cloud storage |
| Blink Outdoor 4 | Live view, motion alerts, two-way talk | Saved clips need a plan, or a Sync Module XR with microSD, or a Sync Module 2 with a USB drive. Person detection needs a plan |
| Ring Outdoor Cam | Live view, motion alerts, two-way talk | Rewatching missed events and smart alerts need a Ring plan |
We do not print plan prices because makers change them. Check current plan pricing on the maker's site before you buy, and check if the plan covers one camera or all of them.
How to read any listing
- Search the page for "subscription" and "sold separately". Read the full sentence around each one.
- Look for a free trial. A trial means the camera will do less once the trial ends.
- Find where video is saved: a card slot, built-in storage, a hub, or cloud only. If you cannot find it, assume cloud only.
- Check who does the person detection. If the listing says it runs on the camera, it usually works with no plan. If it is listed under the plan, it does not.
When a plan is worth it
- Theft of the camera. A card inside a stolen camera leaves with the thief. Cloud video does not. A hub indoors solves this too.
- Many cameras from one brand. Some plans cover every camera at one address.
- You already pay. If you have a Ring doorbell on a plan, adding a Ring Outdoor Cam keeps it all in one app.
If none of those fit you, start with a camera that saves video locally. See the picks.
